Doing more with less. Our sustainability policy.

Sustainability is a big word

It’s an even bigger responsibility. At ABP Food Group we believe it is our duty to do everything we can to ensure that our growth is not at the expense of our natural environment.

After all, it is our natural environment that sustains our business, so we are developing our business to sustain our environment.

That’s why we at ABP Food Group are implementing major sustainability initiatives at every level of our business, from farm to fork.

Whether it’s reducing our carbon footprint, increasing energy efficiency or working with our farmers to develop a more efficient supply chain, we’re dedicated to improving how we work day to day.

Sustainability, by definition, is a long-term commitment. By taking small but definitive steps today, we intend to have made big strides by 2020 and beyond.

  • Doing more with less
  • 2020 Aims
  • 30% CO2 reductions
  • Zero waste to landfille
  • 50% less water consumption
  • 30% less specific energy consumption
  • 40% less electricity

Our Pledge

Product integrity is one of the corner stones of the ABP Beef business, and is rigorously enforced throughout our group.

Our Pledge

We know that it’s easy to be vague about sustainability, which is why we’ve put our targets and KPIs down in black and white.

As part of our Group-wide sustainability plan, we’ve pledged to achieve the following with set KPIs for each site by 2020:

  • Reduce our carbon footprint by 30%
  • Zero waste going to landfill across the ABP Group
  • Reduce our water consumption by 50%
  • Reduce our energy consumption by 30%
  • Reduce our electricity usage by 40%

But it’s not all facts and figures; we appreciate that many sustainability issues are about more than just efficiencies.

Which is why we also have targets for issues that can’t be measured in numbers, but are no less important to our sustainability credentials.

Resource utilisation

At ABP Food Group our respect for the environment and our animals ensures that we have the highest standards of animal welfare whilst simultaneously maximising our conversion efficiency across all of our integrated divisional operations. From fresh beef to pet food to rendering to renewables we understand the fundamental sustainability of making sure nothing goes to waste.

We have promised to substantially and continually invest in research and market development on a site-by-site basis, so that our processes can deliver 100% by-product recovery.

Olleco is the brand name of the ABP Food Group Renewables division. Converting by products of the food processing and food retailing industry into Biofuels, Olleco also provides 100% resource recovery for foodservice businesses through a virtuous cycle of integrated supply, collection and conversion solutions delivered to the highest service standards.

Blade Farming

Blade Farming is ABP Food Group’s dedicated beef farming business. The business is focussed on producing high quality, consistent beef through a controlled beef supply chain management operation by reducing unnecessary costs in beef production and optimising cattle performance. Blade Farming ensures that the cattle are in the right environment so that they can thrive and optimise their natural growth to ensure that farmers in the Blade system are efficient and have a great business model.

The Blade Farming calf rearing contracts allow new entrants into beef production due to the unique business model where Blade carries the working capital for farmers. This offers a guaranteed income for farmers as well as a partnership with the Blade team who specialise in calf procurement, calf rearing, beef finishing and animal nutrition.

True sustainability is never a quick fix; it takes dedication, time and extensive planning. That said, we’re making great progress towards our goals at both Group and site level.

Zero Waste to Landfill

Zero Waste to Landfill

We aim to be running zero waste to landfill across the entire Group by 2015.

As of 2014, we are now running at zero waste to landfill in Ireland (a third of our total sites Group wide). We hoped we could achieve it by 2015 – we’ve done it a year early. This means than we are well on our way to meeting one of our major sustainability pledges.
